In a remarkable full-circle journey, President Bola Tinubu has appointed Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho as the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), 32 years after Dantsoho began his career there as a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member. This appointment marks a historic milestone, as Dantsoho becomes the most junior official in NPA history to ascend to this prestigious position. Alongside him, Senator Adedayo Adeyeye has been appointed as the Chairman of the NPA Board.
Dr. Dantsoho’s academic credentials are as impressive as his professional journey. He holds a Doctorate in Maritime Technology from Liverpool John Moores University and a Master’s in International Transport from Cardiff University. His career at the NPA began in 1992, shortly after he graduated with a Bachelor of Science from the University of Maiduguri. Starting as a marketing officer, Dantsoho steadily climbed the ranks, serving in various roles such as Senior Marketing Officer, Assistant Manager of the Commercial Department, and Principal Manager in the Tariff and Billing Division. His extensive experience culminated in key positions like Port Manager of Onne Port and Technical Assistant to the Managing Director, before his recent elevation to Managing Director.
Dr. Dantsoho’s career at the NPA is marked by significant achievements and contributions to the maritime sector. He has chaired several technical committees, including those for establishing cargo tracking notes and the Port Community System. His international experience includes participating in global conferences and delegations, such as the World Ports Conference, United Nations General Assembly and the International Maritime Organization. Notably, Dantsoho played a crucial role in the successful berthing of the Egina Floating Production Storage and Offloading ship in Nigerian waters, earning him a commendation from the NPA. With over three decades of service, Dr. Dantsoho’s appointment as Managing Director signifies a new era for the NPA, driven by his extensive knowledge and vision for the future of Nigeria’s ports.
