Chioma Okafor, a rising soccer star eligible to represent both Nigeria and Malawi, is making her mark at the University of Connecticut (UConn). Born in Malawi to a Malawian mother and a Nigerian father, Okafor’s football journey began in Malawi, where opportunities for girls in soccer were limited.
Her breakthrough came in 2019 when she moved to the United States to attend the Berkshire School in Massachusetts. There, she transformed the school’s girls’ soccer team, leading them to the playoffs in consecutive seasons. Her standout performances drew the attention of college recruiters, ultimately earning her a scholarship to UConn.
Since joining UConn, Okafor has continued to excel, earning accolades such as All-BIG EAST Second Team and All-BIG EAST Freshman Team honors in 2022, followed by recognition as an NSCAA Third Team All-American in 2023. She ended her first season with a series of impressive performances, including a hat trick against Seton Hall and a crucial postseason goal against St. John’s. With 15 goals so far, she stands as UConn’s leading scorer, contributing significantly to her team’s success.
Transitioning from being a primary scorer at Berkshire to a more well-rounded player at UConn, Okafor has focused on enhancing her defensive skills. This growth has strengthened her game, making her a versatile asset on the field. Her achievements have not come without challenges — adjusting to the fast-paced life and higher costs in the U.S. has required resilience both on and off the pitch.
Okafor’s dual eligibility for Nigeria and Malawi opens exciting possibilities for her international career. She remains open to representing either nation, with plans to pursue a professional career after college.
