On a day when Lionel Messi set yet another World Cup record, and Argentina advanced to the round of 16 to continue their title defense, Cape Verde was the name on everyone’s lips.
If doggedness of spirit and performance got it there, the brilliance of Sidny Lopes Cabral’s goal will keep it there for a while. It was unquestionably one of the greatest World Cup goals and moments from the now Trabzonspor man.
Born in Rotterdam, Netherlands in 2002, he played as a youth with the FC Twente academy before joining Swedish club Helsingborg, where he played with the youth team until he joined Rot-Weiß Erfurt for his first professional season.

The following year, he joined German club Viktoria Köln, where he played 46 games and scored once. Cabral moved to Portugal in the summer of 2025, signing a three-year contract with Primeira Liga club Estrela da Amadora that would last until 2028. Cabral became an offensive weapon for his new club in his debut season, scoring five goals and assisting twice in the league, with the highlight being a hat-trick against Casa Pia.
After impressing during the first half of the season with Estrela, Cabral joined fellow Primeira Liga side Benfica on December 30, 2025, signing a contract until June 2030 for €6 million. He made his debut on January 4, 2026, as a substitute in a 3-1 league win over Estoril at the Estádio da Luz.

Cabral scored his first Benfica goal on January 25th, the third in a 4-0 league win over his former club Estrela da Amadora. He was sold to Turkish club Trabzonspor for €10 million just before the 2026 World Cup, but after tonight’s performance, he may have a few more suitors looking to sign him before the start of next season.
Cabo Verde’s dream came crashing to a heroic, herculean end when Lopes Cabral had another chance to equalize from a free kick but was denied by Emiliano Martinez. The run may be over, but Cabo Verde’s legacy and Lopes Cabral’s goal will endure forever.

The West Africans did it again in their first knockout stage match, this time against the defending champions. Following three consecutive draws in the group stages, Bobista’s team tied Lionel Messi and Argentina after 90 minutes.
They were down a goal in the early minutes of extra time, but Cabo Verde and their 23-year-old defender Sidney Lopes Cabral pulled off a stunning performance. With the wind in the Albiceleste’s sails and the gas tank nearly empty, Lopes Cabral delivered a golazo that his country and fans around the world will not soon forget.

From outside the area, he made one move around a defender, then used another to curl a beautifully struck and perfectly placed shot into the top corner. Lopes Cabral was ecstatic as he ran through a sea of his teammates, hands on his head, and up into the stands to find his partner.
If it is not marked down as the goal of the tournament, it will require something magical to surpass it. He has come out of this World Cup as one to watch both for club and country. It’ll be fascinating to see if he has more of those finishes in his locker down the line
