Doreen Moraa Moracha’s Journey to Demystify HIV and Empower a Generation

Doreen Moraa Moracha is redefining the narrative surrounding HIV. Born with the virus and diagnosed at age eight, Doreen didn’t fully learn about her status until she was 13, when antiretroviral drugs became accessible in Kenya. From that moment, she embarked on a journey that has since transformed her into a global advocate for HIV education, de-stigmatization, and youth empowerment.

Doreen’s story is one of resilience and purpose. Her early years were marked by health struggles and misdiagnoses, as her family grappled with the mystery of her recurring illnesses. Losing her younger brother to AIDS-related complications deepened the shadow of HIV in her family’s life. But when her diagnosis was confirmed, Doreen’s parents became her strongest support system, ensuring she accessed treatment and lived a full life.

Today, Doreen leverages her platform as a social media influencer in Nairobi, Kenya, to inspire millions. Through her YouTube channel, I Am a Beautiful Story, and other social media initiatives, she shares her experiences and spreads a message of hope: living with HIV doesn’t define your potential. Her advocacy extends beyond storytelling, encompassing projects aimed at educating communities, empowering young people, and breaking down barriers of stigma.

One of her landmark initiatives is the Youth Hub, developed in collaboration with the International AIDS Society (IAS). This digital platform connects young people affected by HIV, fostering leadership, education, and peer support. The Youth Hub is not just a resource; it’s a lifeline for young changemakers seeking to amplify their voices in the global HIV response.

Doreen’s accolades reflect her impact. Recognized as one of Africa’s 100 most impactful changemakers, she has served on the UN Women Generation Equality Youth Task Force and contributed to the Education Plus Young Women Leadership Hub. In 2021, she received the AYP Community Advocacy Award at the Maisha Conference, cementing her role as a leading voice in the fight against HIV-related stigma.

Despite her many achievements, Doreen remains grounded in her mission: normalizing conversations about HIV. She believes that education is the key to dismantling stigma, addressing misinformation, and fostering inclusivity. By encouraging open dialogue, she challenges communities to view HIV not as a death sentence but as a manageable condition that doesn’t define one’s worth or aspirations.
