One of the most recognizable goalkeepers in the competition’s history, Mexico’s Guillermo Ochoa has become synonymous with the World Cup.
There is a joke that he only spawns into existence every four years when the Mundial comes around and no one knows his club side at that moment. That’s how much of an imprint he has made throughout his career.

Even though Mexico has only ever made it to the round of 16 during his time between the sticks, he has definitely won the hearts of the footballing world with his spectacular saves and match-winning performances over his two-decade career.
Ochoa has been involved in six World Cup squads over his two decade professional career, making his tournament debut in Brazil in 2014 and his final appearance in 2026 – a 3-0 win over Czechia in Mexico’s final group game at the Estadio Azteca.
But he has only appeared in four of them – being second choice in 2006 and 2010. Manager Javier Aguirre subbed on Ochoa for first choice goalie Raul Rangel in the 77th minute with Mexico holding a 2-0 lead for an emotional farewell 157th and final appearance for El Tri.

Ochoa came on for his final appearance for Mexico to rapturous applause and emotion from the stands. His teammates showed their appreciation by lifting him in the air post match.
Ochoa took to Instagram to reflect on the occasion:“Several days have passed, and I’m still processing everything that the night of June 24 meant to me.” “Wearing my country’s jersey at a World Cup will always be a privilege. Doing it in my home stadium, with my family, surrounded by my people and feeling their love in every cheer and every round of applause is a memory that will stay with me forever.” “Thank you for making that night unforgettable. Thank you for being there, for believing in me and for making me feel at home once again. I’ll carry that moment in my heart. Always.”

Ochoa was only called up to the squad after second choice Luis Angel Malagon pulled out with an Achilles injury, to the excitement of the Mexicans all over. His last cap pre-World Cup cap coming in 2024, Ochoa seemed to be done with the national team.
The expectation is that Ochoa will call time on his illustrious career after Mexico’s journey in the World Cup ends. He turns 41 a day before the first semi final on July 14 and without a club after his contract with Cypriot side AEL Limassol ended, it would not come as a surprise to see the man known as Memo hang up his gloves.

You go to any part of Mexico and he is regarded as one of the greatest goalkeepers the country has ever produced, impressing both locally for Club America over two trophy laden spells and the national team.
The highly regarded Ochoa became the first Mexican goalkeeper to play in Europe when he signed for French side, Ajaccio in 2011. He leaves with his trophies – six CONCACAF Gold cup medals, a Nations League winners medal and a third place Copa America medal – and as one of the defining figures in Mexico’s football history.
