The Raheem Sterling Foundation has launched a scholarship program set to provide 14 students from King’s College London and the University of Manchester with essential financial support and mentorship over the next three years. This initiative, targeting students from Black, African, and Caribbean heritage from socio-economically under-represented backgrounds in Greater London and Greater Manchester, aims to bridge the attainment gap for Black British students, foster social mobility, and ensure equal access to higher education.
Reflecting on the past year, students from both King’s College London and the University of Manchester have highlighted the transformative impact of the program. By alleviating financial burdens, the scholarship has allowed them to focus fully on their academic pursuits and engage more deeply in university life. The comprehensive coverage of tuition fees, accommodation costs, and other essential expenses has removed significant barriers that often hinder academic success for students from underrepresented backgrounds.
Raheem Sterling, who met some of the scholarship recipients during their first term in 2023, expressed his joy in seeing the positive outcomes. “I’m delighted to hear these inspiring stories from the students and to hear how the scholarship programme has helped to provide positive experiences during the first year of their course. Through education, we can drive real social mobility and create long-lasting pillars that will last throughout their studies, into future careers and beyond. I look forward to welcoming the second group of students into the scholarship programme and following their progress over the next few years,” Sterling said.
Beyond academic support, the scholarship program also emphasizes entrepreneurial development. By providing mentorship, the program connects students with successful professionals and entrepreneurs, offering insights into the business world and fostering an entrepreneurial mindset. This mentorship is designed to equip students with the skills and confidence needed to pursue entrepreneurial ventures, thereby creating opportunities for economic empowerment and leadership within their communities.
Research indicates that in the 2021/22 academic year, less than 8.5% of all UK students starting undergraduate degrees were Black. The Raheem Sterling Foundation scholarships aim to change this narrative by closing the attainment gap, promoting social mobility, and supporting equal access to higher education. This initiative not only benefits the individual students but also contributes to a more diverse and inclusive entrepreneurial landscape in the UK.
