Rayan Cherki seems to both delight and enrage people in equal measure. You would describe him as something of a maverick that creates magic on the field.
Even before making a memorable debut for Lyon at the age of sixteen, Cherki—possibly the most two-footed player in world football and endowed with extraordinary technical ability—was a rising star.
Cherki had big shoes to fill when he was brought in to replace club legend Kevin de Bruyne, but early indications indicate that he can fill the void left by the talented Belgian and his inventiveness.
In his first season, the midfielder created 21 big chances, trailing only Bruno Fernandes of Manchester United in all those metrics. Twelve of his Premier League assists came from open play. Cherki, who was born in Lyon to an Italian father and an Algerian mother, could represent France, Algeria, or Italy abroad.
He repeatedly declared that his goal was to play for France and advanced through the French youth system in spite of rumors about his future. Cherki played for France at a number of youth levels, displaying the flair, inventiveness, and close control that made him one of Europe’s most promising prospects.
For the France Under-21 team, he was a standout performer who established himself as one of the team’s main attacking players and scored spectacular goals. Thierry Henry called up Cherki for the French Olympic team in 2024.
Despite not being a consistent starter, he started the last group-stage game and contributed significantly off the bench. France advanced to the Olympic final, but Spain won the silver medal after defeating them 5–3 in extra time.
Cherki was awarded the French National Order of Merit as a member of the team. At the international level, Rayan Cherki has experienced a swift ascent.
Even though he didn’t make his senior debut for France until 2025, he had already established a stellar record with the youth teams and competed for his nation at the Olympics before emerging as one of Didier Deschamps’ team’s most promising young players.
It’s hard to imagine a more remarkable debut. He immediately displayed the inventiveness that had made him one of France’s most highly regarded young players when he came on as a substitute against Spain in the semi-final, scoring a spectacular goal and providing an assist in an exciting 5–4 loss.
Three days later, France defeated Germany 2-0 in the third-place play-off, marking his first start. At just 22 years old, Cherki is already considered by many to be among the most influential members of France’s future generation.
The stage is being set for a new era of Les Bleus, with Didier Deschamps expected to retire following the 2026 World Cup and Antoine Griezmann’s international career coming to an end. Given France’s exceptional attacking depth, Cherki might continue to play a supporting role in the near future, but in the coming years, he is anticipated to play a bigger role in the national team.
He is one of France’s best long-term prospects because of his inventiveness, flair, and capacity to get past obstinate defenses. Many people think he has the ability to play a significant role for Les Bleus as the next generation takes center stage.
