From a young age, Arooj Sheikh harbored a dream that seemed insurmountable: to qualify as a barrister in the UK. Raised in Kenya by a single mother, Arooj’s aspirations faced numerous obstacles. Her mother, a guiding force in her life, always encouraged her to dream big, emphasizing that it wasn’t where she studied that mattered, but what she did with her education. Unable to afford studying in the UK directly, Arooj embarked on an unconventional path. She began her law degree in Malaysia, with the intention of transferring to the UK for her final year. Initially disheartened by this compromise, Arooj’s resolve was fortified by her mother’s wisdom. During her time in Malaysia, she studied English, Malaysian, and Sharia law, often questioning their future applicability. However, as she embraced the experience, it became one of the most memorable periods of her life.
In her final year, Arooj transferred to Cardiff University. Navigating the complexities of the UK’s legal qualification process without guidance, she managed to secure a full scholarship from her Inn, a testament to her tenacity and talent. However, her journey was far from over. After passing the Bar course and being Called to the Bar, she faced the daunting task of securing a 12-month pupillage, essential for appearing in court in England and Wales. Over several years, Arooj faced over 20 rejections, a period marked by soul-searching and resilience. Her path took a turn when she moved back to Kenya, securing a position as an Associate at an international arbitration firm. There, she also dedicated time to volunteering with death row inmates.
This period of service and reflection brought clarity. Arooj made two pivotal decisions: to establish a charity aimed at building positive futures for children accompanying their mothers to prison, and to qualify as a Solicitor in England and Wales, but only at her dream law firm. To achieve her second goal, Arooj’s determination knew no bounds. Juggling a full-time job, she woke up at 4 am for three months to prepare for her interview. Her perseverance paid off, landing her a position at Clifford Chance LLP, a prestigious magic circle law firm. Reflecting on her journey, Arooj realized that her unique experiences in Malaysia, her rejections, and the wisdom imparted by her mother were instrumental in her success.
In April 2023, after 14 years of relentless pursuit, Arooj Sheikh qualified as a Solicitor. Her story is a testament to the power of resilience, the importance of living in the moment, and the profound impact of a mother’s guidance. Through her charity, Beyond Kenyan Bars, and her legal career, Arooj continues to inspire, proving that with determination and heart, no dream is too big.
