Dr Akinwumi Adesina, the outgoing President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), has been appointed to the Council of Advisors of the prestigious World Food Prize Foundation. The announcement, made by the Foundation’s President, Mashal Husain, reinforces Adesina’s enduring legacy as a global voice in agriculture, food security, and economic transformation.

Adesina, a Nigerian economist and internationally respected development expert, brings decades of hands-on leadership in agricultural innovation and policy reform across Africa. His appointment reflects not only his individual pedigree but also the growing recognition of African leadership in shaping solutions to global challenges such as hunger, malnutrition, and climate-smart agriculture.
The World Food Prize Foundation, often dubbed the “Nobel Prize for Food and Agriculture”, is renowned for celebrating individuals who have advanced human development by improving the quality, quantity, or availability of food in the world. Its Council of Advisors comprises an elite group of global leaders who help shape the Foundation’s strategy and mission. Adesina joins this inner circle at a pivotal time when the need for sustainable food systems and inclusive development is more urgent than ever.
During his tenure at the AfDB, Adesina spearheaded groundbreaking initiatives like “Feed Africa”, which aimed to transform the continent’s agricultural landscape and lift millions out of poverty. His track record also includes serving as Nigeria’s Minister of Agriculture, where he introduced reforms that significantly reduced food import dependency and empowered smallholder farmers.

Reacting to the announcement, development experts and African leaders have described the appointment as a powerful statement that Africa’s expertise is critical in global development conversations. It also signals a continued commitment to ensuring that the voices of leaders from the Global South are not only heard but are driving innovation and change at the highest levels.
Dr Adesina’s new role on the Council will see him advising on strategic initiatives, supporting the selection of laureates, and championing efforts to accelerate global agricultural transformation, especially in vulnerable communities.

His presence on the Council is widely viewed as a strategic bridge between African innovation and global action.
