Amusan, Enekwechi Lead Nigeria’s 45-Man Squad for African Athletics Championships in Accra

Nigeria will field a 45-athlete contingent at the 2026 CAA Senior Athletics Championships, with leading names including world champion hurdler Tobi Amusan and shot put specialist Chukwuebuka Enekwechi confirmed among those selected by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria.

The squad, announced by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, comprises 25 female athletes and 20 male athletes. The selection reflects a balance across sprint events, field disciplines, hurdles, and middle-distance categories as Nigeria prepares for continental competition in Accra.

The championships, organised by the Confederation of African Athletics, are scheduled to take place from 12 to 17 May 2026 in Accra, Ghana. The event brings together Africa’s leading track and field athletes, serving as a key benchmark ahead of global competitions later in the athletics calendar.

Amusan’s inclusion reinforces Nigeria’s strength in sprint hurdles, a discipline in which she has consistently delivered on the world stage. Enekwechi’s selection adds weight to the field events, where Nigeria continues to build competitive depth in shot put and other throwing disciplines.

AFN’s squad selection reflects a broader effort to maintain continuity in elite performance while integrating emerging athletes into senior competition. The mix of experienced internationals and younger prospects signals a transitional phase aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s medal prospects across multiple events.
