Elizabeth Abati: Shaping the Future Through Strategic Innovation

As a child, Elizabeth Abati didn’t envision a career confined to traditional roles like doctor or lawyer. Instead, she dreamed of impacting the world in broader, more profound ways. Her vision extended beyond personal ambition, aiming to enhance the economy and establish international institutions to tackle global issues. While a career in government seemed a natural route, it never truly appealed to her. As she matured and explored various career options, her interest gravitated towards strategy and policy—fields that aligned perfectly with her desire to influence larger systems and solve complex problems.

Abati’s academic journey reflects her commitment to excellence and intellectual curiosity. She graduated with First Class Honours in Law from the University of Bristol, followed by a notable performance at the Nigerian Law School. Her pursuit of knowledge didn’t stop there; she earned a Master of Law from the University of Cambridge. Despite her father’s strong encouragement to study law, Abati’s choice was driven by a genuine interest in the subject and a strategic decision that aligned with her goals. Though she considered economics, law provided a robust foundation for her future aspirations.

Her professional career began at Shell, where she joined the Business Technology Graduate Scheme. This role marked her entry into the energy industry’s technological frontier, where she contributed to retail strategies for the UK and South Africa. Abati’s work at Shell bridged her legal background with technology and business strategy, significantly impacting Shell’s retail app and demonstrating how technology could reshape consumer interactions.

In January 2023, Abati transitioned to a new chapter as a Strategy Manager for Platforms & Ecosystems at Google. In this role, she is not merely adapting to the future but actively shaping it. Her work at Google involves developing strategies that drive technological advancements and promote sustainability. Her role at one of the world’s leading tech companies highlights her unique ability to merge strategic thinking with innovative solutions.

After completing her legal education, she initially explored traditional legal roles in the UK. Finding these options limiting, she pivoted towards consulting and strategy, aligning her career with her passion for sustainability and innovation. This shift, combined with her background and extensive research, has positioned her to make significant contributions in the energy sector and beyond.

Beyond her professional achievements, Abati is deeply involved in advocacy and community engagement. As a World Economic Forum Global Shaper and former ONE Youth Ambassador, she has collaborated with other changemakers to address global challenges. Her representation of youth perspectives at prestigious forums such as the UN Economic and Social Council Youth Forum, the World Bank Youth Summit, and the UN Commission on the Status of Women underscores her dedication to addressing societal issues on a global stage.
