Afrobeats sensation Ruger has revealed that his musical journey began in the church choir, crediting his early experiences for shaping his vocal prowess.
Speaking on a recent episode of Africa Now on Apple Music, the Bounce hitmaker shared that, despite his impressive vocal ability, he rarely showcases it in his recorded songs—reserving it instead for his live performances.

“Only people who have experienced me perform live have had the opportunity to enjoy my vocals. Even in my music, I don’t necessarily show it off,” Ruger stated.

The singer, known for his signature eyepatch and infectious melodies, expressed that his true passion for music comes alive on stage, where he has the freedom to experiment and connect deeply with his audience.
“My favourite time being Ruger is when I’m performing on stage because I get to do whatever I like with my songs. I started from the choir. I know how to sing, especially when it is a song that resonates deeply with me,” he added.

Ruger’s revelation adds him to the list of Nigerian music stars, including the likes of Wizkid, Simi, and Banky W, who honed their craft within the four walls of the church before breaking into the mainstream.
With his unique sound and electrifying performances, Ruger continues to prove that Afrobeats is not just about beats and vibes, but also deeply rooted in talent and vocal artistry.
