THE HEIR TO THE NUMBER 10: Lamine Yamal, Barcelona’s Crown Jewel, and Football’s Brightest Future

Few players have arrived at a FIFA World Cup carrying as much anticipation as Lamine Yamal. Still only 18, the Barcelona and Spain sensation has already established himself as the most captivating young talent in world football and one of the game’s most influential performers.

At Euro 2024, his debut international competition, Lamine Yamal was a 16-year-old schoolboy who had to finish his homework in between matches as Spain won the European Championship.

His most memorable moment in that run was a stunning long range curler to equalize for La Roja after an early France goal in the semifinal.

He had just completed his first senior season with Barcelona, where he made his debut at age 15 in April 2023. And his status and stardom in the game has only kept climbing in an upward trajectory at a rapid and somewhat unprecedented fashion.

In the two years that have followed, he has won the La Liga title a further two times as well as the Copa del Rey and the Supercopa de España, with his most productive term being the just concluded 2025-26 season, scoring 24 goals and providing 18 assists to help Hansi Flick’s side lift the La Liga title.

Although Yamal missed the back end of the season after sustaining a hamstring tear in 1-0 win against Celta Vigo in April, he was the talisman of that star studded Barcelona team, taking him the La Liga player of the season award.

It could be forgotten that Lamine Yamal is still only a teenager yet to turn 19 till July. That’s how much of a star he is. Brand deals with Adidas and McDonald’s among others, commercial commitments, inheriting the iconic number 10 jersey worn by the legendary Lionel Messi at Barcelona.

Speaking of Messi, the comparisons are inevitable: both La Masia products, left footed wingers with elite dribbling ability, passing and chance creation, with Messi already giving his approval. “There’s a very good generation of young footballers who have many years ahead of them,” Messi said. “If I have to choose someone, because of the age and the future that he has, I’ve heard that they have chosen Lamine Yamal and without doubt (it’s him) for me too.”

But for all his talent and precocity he still stays grounded and supported by his family, including his parents, father Mounir and his mother Sheila.

Raised in the Rocafonda neighborhood of Mataro in Catalonia, Yamal was spotted by Barcelona at the age of six. Yamal clocks 19 on July 13th, just one day before the semi-finals of this year’s World Cup, and Spaniards all over as well as most of the footballing world will be genuinely hoping that his injury won’t be a hindrance to his performances.

That’s how important he has become for both club and country. Initial diagnosis on his hamstring injury showed that he would be unable to step on the pitch for Spain until their final group game against Uruguay.

But a lackluster showing going forward in their first match against Cape Verde forced the hands of Luis De La Fuente to send him on in the 70th to provide an otherwise absent threat.

And his presence was immediately felt, drawing multiple Cape Verdeans to himself, beating them with his dribbling and creating chances; even though the desired end product was not there, leading to a goal less draw on the day.

One of the youngest players in the tournament is most definitely the most important for his country and Spain are a different level of dangerous with him on the wing. That may be the most remarkable aspect of Yamal’s story. At an age when most footballers are still learning the demands of elite competition, he has already become indispensable to club and country.

Spain possess world-class talent across every area of the pitch, yet their ambitions increasingly revolve around one teenager from Rocafonda. The World Cup has a long history of introducing future legends to the global stage. Lamine Yamal arrives with a different challenge: proving that he is already one.
