The Steady Rise of Jessica Alupo

Jessica Alupo is a politician and the current Vice President of Uganda.

Jessica Rose Epel Alupo commonly known as Jessica Alupo entered politics as a candidate for the Katakwi District women’s representative in 2001. She ran on the ticket of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) political party, which she won and was re-elected in 2006. 

Alupo started out initially as high school canteen attendant, she was once a teacher at Katakwi High School, Uganda. She was an instructor at the Uganda Warfare Training School, Singo, Central District of Uganda. She was she an intelligence officer at the District, Central Region of Uganda and also an intelligence officer at the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence, in Kampala, Uganda’s capital city,

In 2009, she was appointed as state minister for youth and children affairs. In 2011, she was re-elected to her parliamentary constituency. In the cabinet reshuffle of 27 May 2011, she was promoted to the post of minister of education and sports. She served between 27 May, 2011- 6 June, 2026 and now, she’s the Vice President of the Republic of Uganda, an office she resumed on June 8, 2021.

Born in Katakwi District on 23 May 1974, Alupo attended Apuuton Katakwi Primary School then proceeded to Kangole Girls School for her O-Level studies. She had her A-Level education at Ngora High School. She proceeded to Uganda Junior Staff College in Jinja where she underwent the officer cadet course having trained as a high school canteen attendant.

Alupo graduated from Makerere University with a Bachelor of Arts in political science and languages in 1997. She also earned a Master of Arts in international affairs and diplomacy from Makerere University in 2008. She also has a diploma in public administration and management from the Uganda Management Institute, earned in 2008. (UMI). Her second master’s degree, a Masters in Public Administration and Management, was earned in 2009 at Makerere University.

Alupo is not only successful in politics, she is married to Major Innocent Tukashaba and their union is blessed.
