Taiwo Awoniyi has added another qualification to a football career that is still being written on the pitch. The Nigeria and Coventry City striker has graduated from the PFA Business School with a Postgraduate Diploma in Global Football Sport Directorship, earning the qualification with Merit. Awoniyi announced the achievement on Tuesday, sharing his graduation as a significant moment away from the demands of professional football.
The timing makes the achievement particularly notable. At 29, Awoniyi is still an active Premier League player, having joined Coventry City from Nottingham Forest in August after four seasons at the Nottingham club. His football career has taken him from Nigeria into some of Europe’s most competitive leagues, but alongside that progression he has steadily built an academic track of his own. He previously earned a Diploma in Business Administration and Marketing Management from the London School of International Business in 2020 before completing a Business Management degree at Buckinghamshire New University in 2022.
The PFA qualification takes that education directly into the industry that has shaped his adult life. The Postgraduate Diploma in Global Football Sport Directorship, delivered through the Professional Footballers’ Association’s business school in partnership with the University of Portsmouth, is designed around the strategic and leadership side of football, including areas such as sporting operations, management and organisational decision-making. For a player who has spent his career inside dressing rooms, training grounds and elite competitions, the course offers a different way of understanding the same ecosystem.
Awoniyi has also been clear about why education matters to him. In announcing his graduation, he said he has always believed that being a footballer should not prevent a player from remaining a student of the game. That perspective gives the qualification a significance beyond the certificate itself. Professional football can be an intensely short career, and the knowledge acquired while playing can become useful long after the final appearance. For Awoniyi, learning is happening alongside the career rather than being postponed until it ends.
There is precedent for elite footballers taking that route. Former Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany completed an MBA while still playing, while Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini pursued university and postgraduate education alongside his football career. Awoniyi now belongs to that broader group of professionals treating the football industry as something to understand from more than one position. His new qualification does not announce a move into management, nor has he suggested that retirement is imminent. It simply gives him another set of tools within the sport he already knows from the inside.
That matters especially for African football, where the conversation around player development often ends at performance on the pitch. Awoniyi’s path presents a different model of the modern footballer: an athlete developing commercial, managerial and intellectual interests while still competing at the highest level. His journey from Nigerian football into European football, followed by formal study in business and sport directorship, reflects an understanding that a football career can produce knowledge and networks that remain valuable long after playing stops. The qualification therefore adds another dimension to the story of an increasingly accomplished Nigerian football professional.
For now, though, Awoniyi remains a striker first. The diploma sits alongside a career that is still active, competitive and unfinished. His own closing words after graduation captured that balance simply: “Still playing. Still learning. The journey continues.” It is an unusually fitting line for an athlete who has chosen to prepare for the next phase without stepping away from the present one. The football may eventually take him into another role, but when that moment comes, Taiwo Awoniyi will arrive with experience from the pitch and education from beyond it.
