At 19, Ugo Ugochukwu has already found his place in the record books. The American driver of Nigerian heritage was crowned the 2026 FIA Formula 3 Drivers’ Champion in Madrid on September 13, becoming the first driver from the United States to win the championship. He secured the title with a composed second-place finish in the season’s final Feature Race, ending a remarkable comeback against British rival Freddie Slater and finishing the season on 159 points.
The significance of the result lies partly in how close the championship had been before the final weekend. Ugochukwu arrived in Madrid carrying a 15-point deficit to Slater, meaning there was little room for an ordinary weekend. Instead, the Campos Racing driver turned the final round into a statement of control, navigating the pressure across a three-race finale before sealing the championship with second place. Slater finished eighth in the decisive Feature Race and ended the campaign on 145 points.
It was a striking turnaround for a driver whose first FIA Formula 3 season had offered few hints of what was coming. Racing for PREMA in 2025, Ugochukwu finished 16th overall with two podiums. A year later, a move to Campos Racing produced an entirely different campaign, beginning with victory in the Melbourne Feature Race and eventually yielding two wins, seven podium finishes and the championship itself. The improvement was not built on spectacular flashes alone. Consistency became the defining difference.
His route to this moment began much earlier, in karting, where he started racing competitively as a child and accumulated titles before moving into single-seaters. He won the Euro 4 Championship in 2023 and, in 2024, claimed the Macau Grand Prix, becoming the first American winner of that event in 43 years. Formula 3 was supposed to be another step in the climb. Instead, after a difficult opening season, it became the place where Ugochukwu established himself as a champion.
There is also a distinctly Nigerian thread running through the achievement. Born in New York to Nigerian model Oluchi Onweagba and Italian fashion designer Luca Orlandi, Ugochukwu races under the American flag while openly embracing his Nigerian roots. After winning the championship, he spoke about the pride he takes in his mother’s heritage and the importance of his success to supporters watching in Africa. His story therefore sits naturally within a growing catalogue of African-connected talent making an impact far beyond the continent.
For Campos Racing, the weekend carried another piece of history. The Spanish outfit secured its first FIA Formula 3 Drivers’ Championship through Ugochukwu and also finished top of the Teams’ Championship with 334 points. The achievement gives the team a double crown, while Ugochukwu becomes the latest young driver to emerge from Formula 3 with his career accelerating towards the next level of single-seater racing.
That next level is Formula 2. Ugochukwu’s championship earns him 30 FIA Super Licence points, taking his accumulated total beyond the threshold required for an F1 Super Licence. He has already had his first Formula 1 test mileage, running Alpine’s A524 at Monza earlier this year. None of that guarantees what comes next, but it places the teenager considerably closer to the sport’s highest tier than he was when the 2026 season began.
For now, however, the story belongs to Formula 3 and to a teenager who arrived in Madrid needing to overturn a deficit and left as a champion. Ugo Ugochukwu has given the United States its first FIA Formula 3 title, given Campos Racing its first drivers’ crown and added another significant chapter to the story of Nigerian-linked talent on the global sporting stage. The championship is the achievement. What makes it compelling is how quickly the next chapter is already coming into view.
